The 'gift' of Having Challenges

Sometimes challenges can be fun. Many times, however, they aren’t. The thing is, we can’t avoid them. Nor should we.

“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.”

Bernice Johnson Reagon

No matter how difficult a challenge is, you are being presented with an opportunity to grow from it.

The larger challenges usually throw our lives into disarray and confusion. We begin to question everything we once took as ‘normal’. However, if we can get to the right way of thinking, we can use this to expand our vision to see all the solutions to our challenge and, in doing so, find more opportunities to grow and become better.

The hero’s journey is a much-used metaphor in therapy. The idea is that we should be able to look back on the challenges we’ve faced in life and see ourselves as the hero, rather than the victim of our own story.

Hazel Gale

When you’re in the midst of a challenge, you have to change your thinking and your beliefs. It’s a challenge because what you currently know and believe no longer works. Something in your life is broken and you are being given an opportunity to not only find out what was broken, but to truly fix it; to become the hero of your own story.

So hero, or heroine, if you’re in the midst of a big challenge, what’s your next step?
